Shibuya Station crossing.
The number of people that use the crossing is epic. Getting out of the station is a feat all in it's own but getting here was well worth. For something to do, and for someone who likes to people watch this is the place. Provided that you can get a window seat at Starbucks you get an unobstructed view of the crossing. The only draw back is when I went to at around noon and after finding my spot by the window I could believe how warm it got sitting there. Still, I would not trade the experience of having my coffee watching Tokyo's heart beat with it's 39 million people.
Always know where your going, even if it is to the other side
I learned quick that stopping while your walking is a dumb idea. There is always a sea of people behind you. I found it easier when I was lost or unsure to just find a place where I could regroup and avoid being ran over and head for there.
Idenity in space
Its easy to see the how the relationship of space and humanity plays out at Shibuya Station. Tokyo is not one thing but layers of ideas. The people are of all walks of life and from all over the world interpreting those ideas. Each answering the questions for themselves, what does it mean to be Japanese.
One of my favorite places in all of Tokyo
In the city that has everything it's impossible to see everything, sometimes you have to let Tokyo come to you. Often I think of the hick-up that road construction poses the roads in my home town. I can't imagine the headache of having to make major repairs here.
As the crowds grow
Its amazing how many people gather in prepration for crossing. I saw quickly cars trying to make left hand, right hand turn anything your going no where quick. I found the best method of travel was the metro and good old fashioned walking.
